Industries supplied include: appliances, kitchen utensils, tank covers, and other deep drawn parts. 305 grade stainless has similar corrosion resistance as 304 and has good oxidation resistance in air up to 1650 F (899 C). 305 can be readily formed and deep drawn into complex shapes due to its lower strength and work hardening rate and will remain nonmagnetic after cold work unlike 301 or 304. A caution is autogenous welds in 305 are more sensitive to hot cracking than 304 or 304L.

Additional Information on 305 Stainless Steel
Stainless steel 305 is used for making things such as small electrical components, as well as eyelets, and spun components. You often see this type of metal used in food industries, chemical plants, and textile factories.
At Elgiloy Specialty Metals, a Stainless Steel Precision Rolled Products Division, we want to make sure that all of our customers get the steel that works best for them. We carry a variety of steels including 302 stainless steel, 347 stainless steel, and 409 stainless steel, and we have a plentiful supply of stainless steel 305 so that we can always meet demand and deliver on time.
Stainless steel 305 can only be hardened by cold working it, and it cannot be hardened with heat. This is because it has an elevated Nickel content, which means that it will not harden as much as some other steels while cold working. This, in turn, means that you have less chance of your items cracking while being formed. It is a great choice for multiple step processes where you do not use processing annealing.
Also, unlike some other steels that are similar to stainless steel 305, this particular type of stainless steel will not become magnetic at any point. Type 305 is an austenitic Chromium-Nickel steel.
We can provide 305 stainless steel in both sheets and in strips. Many of our clients intend to weld it and they often choose this material because they know it will do fairly well against corrosion. Type 305 is used in very deep drawn applications because of the high nickel content.
It works well in multiple industries that are using different chemicals and holds up against them. It is also very closely related to the corrosion properties you will find in stainless steel 304.
The chemical makeup of this steel includes seven properties:
- Carbon, up to .12%
- Sulfur%, up to .030
- Manganese, up to 2%
- Phosphorus, up to .045%
- Silicon, up to .75%
- Chromium, about 18%, and
- Nickle, about 11%.
